Local knowledge

The Wairau River Restaurant opened in 1991, right off the back of New Zealand’s launch to international wine stardom. Today, it features a menu peppered with fresh regional ingredients and is overseen by eldest Rose daughter Pip, with sister Caroline as Head Chef. Well worth a reservation.

Through the heart of New Zealand’s most famous wine region flows the peaceful path of the Wairau River, the 170-kilometre-long waterway that serves as the lifeblood of Marlborough wine. In the river’s fertile surrounds, known as the Wairau Valley, Phil and Chris Rose helm a true family affair at the aptly named Wairau River Wines, where they’ve been growing grapes and cultivating their lush plot of land since 1978.

Alongside Phil and Chris, son Hamish oversees all things viticulture, and his brother Sam crafts the wines, which range from Marlborough trademark Sauvignon Blanc to distinctive cool-climate expressions of varietals including Grüner Veltliner and Albariño. At the Wairau River Cellar Door and Restaurant, eldest daughter Pip handles management whilst sister Caroline dreams up the food that graces the seasonal menu, highlighting fresh ingredients from local producers across Marlborough.
