Victorian Chardonnay wine-tinerary
Here’s where we’ll be adventuring:
Circe Chardonnay 2019
Circe is the mind-meld of Dan Buckle and Aaron Drummond, winemakers who met while working at iconic Shiraz producer Mount Langi Ghiran. Inspired by their mutual childhood stomping ground — the tranquil, cool-climate Mornington Peninsula, modern paradise for the likes of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay — the duo headed home and founded Circe, named for the enchantress of Homer’s Odyssey and an ode to the seductive, irresistible wines they hoped to create. And seductress this hand-harvested Chardonnay certainly is. Whole-bunch pressed into large French oak puncheons, it sings of grapefruit, flint, and classy elegance.
Paringa ‘PE’ Chardonnay 2019
Our second stop takes us to Mornington Peninsula’s Red Hill, the quaint little Aussie hamlet famed for its breathtaking coastal scenery. Based on Paringa Estate’s long list of accolades — a Halliday Wine Companion ‘Best Winery in Australia’, countless medals in wine shows and prestigious publications — you might not expect that founder Lindsay McCall began his wine journey as a geography teacher. Since finding his calling, a realisation he recounts as a ‘wine epiphany’, he’s amassed a cult-like following for his near-religious attention to detail. Be sure to make a reservation at the much-lauded Paringa Estate Restaurant.
Tokar Estate ‘Coldstream Vineyard’ Chardonnay 2018
The Tokar family spent four years underneath the humming Australian sun, clearing 30 acres of thistles to make way for vines and dodging a legion of snakes in the process. Today, son Daniel works side-by-side with parents Leon and Rita, lovingly cultivating their plot outside the tiny Gruyere in Yarra Valley’s ‘golden mile’. Running to the foot of the acclaimed Coldstream Hills, Tokar Estate’s vineyard forms the heart of the family’s reputation as risk-taking trailblazers — a renown they’ve held since pioneering the growth of Tempranillo in the region. The single-vineyard ‘Coldstream’, a delectable balance of creamy complexity and lemon-lime freshness, is a revelation in the art of modern Yarra Valley Chardonnay.
Bellvale Athena’s Vineyard Chardonnay 2017
We now cross east to Gippsland, land of rugged beauty and purveyor of some of Victoria’s top Chardonnay. Widely considered a Gippsland viticultural pioneer, Bellvale is family-owned and run by John Ellis, a former 747 pilot whose aviation career brought him into intimate acquaintance with Burgundy and its world-famous wines. Driven by a desire to produce New World expressions of his beloved Burgundian vino, he spent a decade scouring the globe for the perfect growing site. Gippsland won his heart, and today he crafts award-winning wines from exquisite cool-climate fruit that thrives under the watchful eyes of two towering oaks, planted at the heart of Bellvale’s vineyard and immortalised on their labels.
Serengale Chardonnay 2018
In 1999, after a three-year search, Gayle Taylor and Serena Abbinga happened upon the perfect vineyard site: 60 acres in Beechworth, in the lap of the Victorian Alps. They spent the first few years nurturing their vines in pursuit of the ultimate goal: crafting full-bodied, elegant wines that express Beechworth's cool-climate power. Their dedication paid off; in 2020, the stellar quality of Serengale, naturally produced under the gaze of ‘Supervisor’ and rescue dog Jezebel, earned them five-star winery recognition in Halliday Wine Companion. They even sell fruit to the iconic Giaconda down the road — and what they keep for themselves, they transform into jewels like this estate-grown, hand-picked, richly opulent Chardonnay.
Clyde Park Estate Chardonnay 2019
Southwest we go, stopping in the remarkably diverse Geelong's Moorabool Valley, which the surrounding terrain shrouds in a rain shadow — making drought common and enticing excellent wine talents to grow grapes amidst its unforgiving yet rewarding climes. One of these talents is the team at Clyde Park, a regional staple since 1979 who craft the likes of this stylish Chardonnay sustainably and according to low-waste viticultural principles. Black-faced Suffolk sheep shuffle amongst the 167 acres of farmland and vineyard whilst 40 mother hens provide eggs for the largely self-sufficient operation, home to a cellar door built from gold-rush era bricks, reclaimed Oregon oak, and ironbark wood from the Blue Mountains.
