In 2002, Kym Teusner and Mick Page unleashed their inaugural vintage ‘Joshua’ — a Grenache-Mataro-Shiraz blend with not a speck of oak upon him. It sold like wildfire, inspiring them to create a spinoff aged in seasoned oak for 12 months. This transformation, commemorated in the name ‘Avatar’, pays homage to what the Teusner duo believe to be the best-drinking wines from their Barossa homeland: the holy trinity of Aussie signature Shiraz, the brightly spicy Grenache, and the deeply savoury Mataro. Made with fruit gathered from the twisted boughs of century-old vines baked in the pulse of the Barossan sun, the 2018 Avatar is a masterclass in modern Australian winemaking.
Old vine grenache, mataro and shiraz. Firm, bold, fresh and characterful. A terrific release. Plum, redcurrant, campfire and sweet spice. Ribs of velvety tannin. Somehow manages to feel both generous and controlled. Super.

2001 found Kym Teusner and Mick Page tossing back a couple of pints at a local pub, where they overheard grapegrowers discussing the imminent destruction of some then-85-year-old Grenache vines. The duo came to the rescue, and offered them 4 times what they’d been paid by ‘the big guys’ for the crop if they’d keep the vineyard in the ground.
