In years when all the elements of a winegrowing season conspire just right, the vines growing in Parker’s celebrated Abbey vineyard produce fruit of such calibre that the Hesketh family deems it worthy of a First Growth wine. Few other wines in Australia carry the history and pedigree behind First Growth; crafted from Reynella Selection cuttings (original cuttings from pre-phylloxera Bordeaux) and judged to have cellaring potential surpassing 15 years, these are truly exceptional masterpieces that deserve a prime spot in every Australian cellar. One of a highly exclusive group to have featured in every Langton’s Classification, First Growth melds plush black-fruit richness with leathery complexity and supreme elegance, creating a wine that sings of the mineral-rich majesty of Coonawarra’s world-renowned Terra Rossa soil and stands proudly amongst the top Cabernet Sauvignon on Earth

THE MAKER

Parker Coonawarra Estate

An Australian icon with roots in Bordeaux

Parker’s story begins with the marriage of two of the world’s most illustrious Cabernet producing wine regions: the legendary banks of Bordeaux and the famed Terra Rossa soil of Coonawarra. In 1985, John and Faye Parker broke ground on their Coonawarra plot with a crop of Reynella Selection Cabernet Sauvignon — original cuttings from Bordeaux, taken before phylloxera carved a swath of ruin through the region in the Great French Wine Blight of the 1800s.

Six years later, the 1988 vintage crafted from these precious vines earned sixth in the Bordeaux-Style category at the 1991 International Wine Challenge in London, cementing Parker’s status as an up-and-coming Australian icon and heralding the avalanche of praise that’s since followed. A five-star James Halliday winery and holder of Langton’s Classification V for Excellence, Parker today hums along under the tutelage of the Hesketh family, who proudly cultivate the 20-hectare vineyard in a manner that maintains the original Parker duo’s unwavering commitment to excellence.
