In the 1980s, legendary wine writer Oz Clarke lavished praise on New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, dubbing it ‘arguably the best in the world’ and instantly establishing the small island nation as a rising star of the wine world. Since then, Aotearoa — and particularly the spectacular region of Marlborough at the top of the country’s South Island — has become globally renowned for its signature Sauvignon style: citrus-stacked and complex, with intensely green notes of capsicum, young tomato stalk, and freshly cut grass. But there’s more to Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc than meets the eye — something Brian and Nicola Bicknell have spent over 20 years proving at their Wairau Valley winery Mahi. Crafted with hand-picked fruit sourced from six different vineyards and supplemented by a gentle infusion of Sémillon, Mahi’s extraordinarily elegant expression of this much-adored varietal exhibits a depth of flavour and personality rarely seen from this part of the world.

Mahi

Doing the Mahi in sun-drenched Marlborough

In New Zealand’s most famous wine region, fertile fields unfurl green-gold wings underneath little rain and ample sunshine. Synonymous with Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough caps the northeastern tip of the South Island and produces the grassy, herbaceous whites that catapulted the country onto the world’s wine map in the 1980s.

It’s here we find Mahi, the brainchild of winemaker Brian Bicknell and his wife Nicola, who in 1996 launched their label dedicated to showcasing the multifaceted majesty of Marlborough wine. Named for the Māori word meaning ‘work’ and guided by both a hands-off winemaking philosophy and a deep reverence for the land, Mahi sources exceptional fruit from vineyards dotting the sun-soaked breadth of the region, crafting it into intensely textural, terroir-driven gems at their winery in the Wairau Valley.
