The dry warmth of daytime and the dusky chill of evening in Victoria’s alpine high country collide in spectacular fashion in this award-winning Pinot Gris. Crafted by winemaker Andy Browning at the biodynamically run Delatite Estate — helmed by founders Robert and Vivienne’s son David Ritchie — this 2020 vintage packs a pear-infused punch and knockout layers of apricot and apple.
This is an exceptional gris, a harbinger of a style that is increasingly versatile at the table and reflective of this country's more sophisticated dining culture, both in the restaurant and at home. These mid-weighted highly textural wines are founded, too, in greater winemaking expertise: ambient yeast and neutral wood. After all, gris does not need too much embellishment, but the confidence to allow baked autumnal fruit notes to ease across a peddle of gentle phenolics. This does so in style.

Hitting high notes in Victoria’s high country
Back in 1967, the Barossa Valley’s ‘Master Merlot Maker’ Jim Irvine and third-generation beef and lamb farmer Robert Ritchie headed off for a ski weekend on the powdery slopes of Mount Buller, a lofty peak rising from the ranks of the Victorian Alps. That trip lit a spark in Robert’s mind, and one year later, that spark grew into the first planted vineyard at Delatite Estate, situated near the foot of the mountain where it all began.
