Though it produces world-class Pinot Noir and was one of the first areas in Victoria to plant the grape, Geelong often finds itself overlooked in conversations about this beloved varietal, which expresses itself in deeply earthy, powerfully structured wines when it comes from the Moorabool Valley sub-region. Dry and cool, Moorabool hosts the expansive estate of Clyde Park, sustainable champions who use low-waste viticulture to craft the likes of this exceptionally complex Pinot Noir.

95 POINTS
Halliday Wine Companion

A blend of all five blocks/clones, wild-fermented with 35% whole bunches, matured for 9 months in fruit (30% new). Crystal, clear crimson; the fragrant and expressive bouquet offers red cherry/berry fruits with spice and forest floor aromas. A vibrant palate with red fruits to the fore, spice and superfine tannins. Made by Robin Brockett.

Expect to find

An aromatic forest of juicy blackberry, sour cherry, bright rhubarb, and grounding spice, enveloped in a silky cloak of soft tannins

THE MAKER

Clyde Park Estate

A paragon of sustainability in Geelong

A holistic ecosystem of sustainability reigns supreme at Clyde Park, perched atop a hill overlooking the arid, gold-tinged landscape of Geelong’s Moorabool Valley. An area stalwart since 1979, Clyde Park runs to the rhythm of reduce, reuse, recycle — and upcycle.

Their sustainable methods begin out in the garden (where they grow fruit and vegetables to supply their on-site bistro) before entering the kitchen, where waste is separated into coffee grounds, glass, cardboard, plastic, chicken food for the estate’s 40 mother hens, and compost for the vines. Out amongst the 167 acres of farmland, black-faced Suffolk sheep keep the weeds at bay and the soil healthy, enabling Clyde Park’s plants to produce vibrantly healthy fruit for their pure, intensely complex, award-winning wines. Back at the winery, where most of the water used comes from roof-collected runoff, 100 solar panels power daily operations and retired barrels find new homes as plant pots in the cellar door, built from gold-rush era bricks, reclaimed Oregon oak, and ironbark wood from the Blue Mountains.
