Gamay has a tumultuous history marked by riot and rebellion. Outlawed by Philip the Bold in 1395, it found fast friends in defiant winemakers who hid the forbidden fruit amidst vines of the much-loved and -lauded Pinot Noir. In recent decades, the once-shunned French varietal has begun a renewed rise to the throne, amassing a cult following amongst renegades and innovators and gaining fame for its juicy lightness, crunchy texture, and refreshing bounce. Uva Non Grata, made using carbonic maceration by global wine collective Boutinot and named in the Latin fashion for ‘ungrateful grapes’, hails from Gamay’s spiritual home amidst the sloping hills of Beaujolais in France and showcases a delightfully disruptive personality that’s all zip, spice,
and sunshine.

Expect to find

The fresh fruits of carbonic maceration: bounce, crunch, and zip, underpinned by tart red berries, nuanced cinnamon spice, and subtle earthy heft

Local knowledge

The modern incarnation of a wine originally made to celebrate the end of harvest in Beaujolais, Beaujolais Nouveau (made from Gamay) is wildly popular amongst contemporary wine lovers. France celebrates Beaujolais Nouveau Day, which falls in November, with a fireworks-and-music-filled festival

THE MAKER

Boutinot

The globe-spanning wine collective

In 1980, Paul Boutinot was having trouble finding quality wine to source for his parents’ restaurant. Out of frustration, he started his own plucky little import operation — and as other restaurateurs caught wind of it, it grew legs and blossomed into Boutinot, today a global, truly modern enterprise with a team spread across three continents and wines in a remarkable 40 countries.
Boutinot’s diverse in-house team of winemakers oversee the production of every bottle, whether it’s crafted in partnership with one of the small family growers in Boutinot’s sprawling network or made from fruit picked from one of their sites near the English seaside, amidst the romance of the Southern Rhône, nestled in the verdant valleys of Italy’s Montferrato Hills, or under the watchful gaze of the mountain overlooking South Africa’s rugged Wildeberg farm.
