What’s in the case?
Sail the seas of the Bass Strait — and drop your anchor off the coast of Australia’s most famed Pinot Noir regions: Tasmania and Victoria.
Wind your way through three sub-regions in each state, to explore six passionate producers and their benchmark expressions.
Two Tonne Tasmania TMV Pinot Noir 2019Tamar Valley, TAS
A fresh, strawberry-and-spice sensation from wunderkind winemaker Ricky Evans of Two Tonne Tasmania, named for the tiny amount of Pinot Noir that marked the start of a stratospheric rise to cult status. This is minimal-intervention wine that snapshots the joys and challenges of individual vintages in the Tamar Valley — land of misty valleys, little lakes, and artisan cheesemakers.
Moorilla Praxis Pinot Noir 2018Berriedale, TAS
In 1995, Tasmanian gambler and businessman David Walsh took one of his characteristic risks and bought Moorilla, a down-on-its-luck winery under the blue skies of Tasmania’s Berriedale. And oh, how it paid off. Under the guidance of Conor van der Reest (the ‘wild child of the wine world’, per James Halliday), Moorilla now produces some of Australia’s most exciting wine — like this torrent of sour cherry, strawberry jam, and warm vanilla.
Meadowbank Pinot Noir 2018Derwent Valley, TAS
The spirit running through the veins and vines of Meadowbank is one of headstrong defiance and sheer will. Planted by Gerald Ellis in 1976 on a sheep farm dubbed ‘too wild’ to grow grapes, Meadowbank has established itself as an icon of the modern wine industry thanks to glimmering jewels like this highly rated, immaculate Pinot Noir reminiscent of cinnamon-sprinkled strawberries.
Fleet Gippsland Pinot Noir 2020Gippsland, VIC
At Fleet, husband-and-wife duo Lisa and Justin Jenkins buck formula and convention, working with small amounts of exceptional grapes to craft wines that capture vivid snapshots of Victoria while exercising the utmost respect for the Earth. This exhilarating bouquet of festive spice, punchy cranberry, and generous blood plum is a brilliant picture of Gippsland, a cult scene for Pinot Noir.
Even Keel Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir 2018Mornington Peninsula, VIC
Near Melbourne, close to the crashing roar of waves on popular surf beaches, lies Mornington Peninsula — home to Sam Coverdale’s sustainable Even Keel. Sam marches to the beat of his own drum (he rarely submits his wines for review, preferring to let his cult following decide), using his skill to craft vibrant, terroir-driven vino like this hand-picked vortex of dense black cherry, crunchy raspberry, and rustic earth.
Tokar Estate Coldstream Hills Pinot Noir 2018Yarra Valley, VIC
From ‘95 to ‘99, the Tokar family spent countless hours in the thrumming Australian heat, clearing 30 acres of thistles to make way for vines and dodging a legion of snakes in the process. Now synonymous with ‘groundbreaker’, Tokar Estate lovingly cultivates their plot in the Yarra Valley’s Gruyere, known for savoury Pinot Noir like this highly rated cherry-and-vanilla treasure, lined with swirls of complex smoke.
Meadowbank Pinot Noir 2018 - Vines planted '87, 9 months in oak. Fragrant red fruits/flowers, the silky yet focused palate capturing all the primary fruit flavours that will burst into flower 3-5 years down the track. Unimpeachable balance and length.
Tokar Estate Coldstream Hills Pinot Noir 2018 - Hand-picked, wild-fermented with 30% whole bunches, and a long post-ferment maceration. Ablaze with spices and flowery nuances on the bouquet, the palate long and silky smooth, red berries through to the finish. Delicious.
